Prof Edoba Omoregie, VC of the University of Benin (UNIBEN)
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edoba Omoregie, engaged in a heated exchange with a radio presenter over claims of tuition fee hikes.
The dispute went viral on X after Omoregie joined a live call to address questions about increases in medical and arts school fees, from N85,000 to over N200,000 and N65,000 to N180,000, respectively.
The Vice-Chancellor accused the presenter of spreading misinformation and urged him to verify facts before reporting. “Before you dey say people, you find out before you use the word ‘jack’,” Omoregie said in pidgin, insisting the journalist had presented a “judgemental statement” without evidence.
The reporter countered that parents had called in with complaints about the hikes. Omoregie shot back, warning against deceiving the public and describing the claims as “a naked lie.”
