UNIJOS Female Soccer Team
The University of Jos (UNIJOS) female football team opened its 2025 Nigerian University Games (NUGA) campaign with an automatic victory after its opponent, the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), failed to appear for its opening group match.
The fixture, scheduled to be held at the Federal College of Forestry pitch, was meant to be the first outing for both sides. However, while the four match officials and the UNIJOS team arrived early and completed pre-match formalities, the FUL squad was absent for more than an hour after the scheduled kick-off time.
In line with NUGA football regulations, match officials subsequently awarded a walkover to UNIJOS, granting them three points and three goals.
UNIJOS’s head coach, Mohammed Dauda, said his side complied fully with all matchday procedures. “We arrived earlier than scheduled and waited for hours without seeing our opponents,” he told Campulse News. “The referee completed all formalities and officially declared the match a walkover. Our focus now is on the next fixture. The girls are ready and confident.”
Unijos Female Soccer captain, Patience Moses, expressed disappointment at not getting to play. “It is sad they didn’t show up. We were really looking forward to the game. The points are good, but we wanted to test our fitness and teamwork on the pitch. Hopefully, the next match goes as planned,” she said
A NUGA female football coordinator confirmed that FUL officials attended the pre-tournament technical meeting and were aware of their fixtures. “We found only the UNIJOS team at the venue,” she said. “After the required waiting period, we followed the rules and reported to the NUGA organising committee, which approved the walkover.”
The result gives UNIJOS three points and a +3 goal advantage as they look to build momentum in their next group-stage match.
