The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting responsible mining as it hosts a two-day capacity-building workshop for miners in Plateau State.
The programme, which opened on Wednesday, is themed “Enhancing Safety, Sustainability and Community Development in Mining.” It is organised by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in collaboration with the university and its Professional Chair in Geology and Mineral Science.
Speaking at the event, Professor Ishaya, represented by Professor Samuel Ode, highlighted the value of collaboration between academia, industry, government, and local communities through the workshop. He noted that the initiative aligns with the university’s mission to deliver knowledge-based solutions that improve lives while protecting the environment.
He added that Plateau State and the wider Middle Belt are rich in mineral resources and human potential, stressing that education and research can turn mining into a driver of inclusive growth.
The PTDF Executive Secretary, Ahmed Galadima, represented by Paul Ohabike, said the Fund remains committed to building local capacity in the mining sector. He explained that equipping artisanal miners with safer, more sustainable methods would benefit communities and support national economic transformation.
