The 13th Annual Health Week of UNILAG Medical Center public lecture
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Medical Centre has continued its 13th Annual Health Week with a public lecture addressing substance abuse among adolescents and young people. The event, held on 2 December at Afe Babalola Hall, was themed “Substance Abuse Among Adolescents and the Youth: Stemming the Tide.”
Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, represented by the Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Ademola Oremosu, commended the Medical Centre for its proactive screening of students for harmful substances.
She described the lecture as a timely intervention to raise awareness and inform policy on adolescent health and well-being.
Director of the Medical Centre, Dr Olayinka Coker, highlighted the lecture as part of the centre’s ongoing commitment to student welfare and efforts to curb substance abuse on campus.
The lecture was delivered by Counselling and Clinical Psychologist Dr Mustapha ‘Toyin Sanbe, who discussed the causes, effects, and persistent patterns of substance abuse among youths. He advocated reducing demand through awareness campaigns, peer-led initiatives, and support groups, while urging those struggling with addiction to seek help.
The 13th Annual Health Week began on 1 December with an HIV/AIDS sensitisation walk. It will conclude on 3 December with a free medical screening and wellness seminar at Tolu Odugbemi Hall, reinforcing UNILAG’s focus on student health and safety.
