The University of Lagos (UNILAG) welcomed the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Dodeleshev, and his spouse, as part of efforts to expand academic collaboration and student exchange between the two countries.
Ambassador Dodeleshev highlighted the growing educational partnership, noting Russia’s recent agreements with Kaduna, Abia, and Niger States, as well as ongoing discussions with Lagos State. He also introduced the Russian-African Network University (RAFU), a platform designed to coordinate academic and scientific collaboration between Russian and African institutions, providing participating universities with shared access to resources.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola acknowledged the visit and highlighted challenges limiting Nigerian participation in Russian exchange programmes. She noted that 15 students applied last year for a one-year immersion programme but were unable to attend due to high airfare costs. She called for expanded scholarships to make the programme more accessible.
Professor Ogunsola also outlined UNILAG’s shift from a narrow language-focused model to a broader Russian Studies programme encompassing language, culture, politics, and history. She emphasised the importance of reciprocal exchange, encouraging Russian students to study in Nigeria to foster understanding and counter stereotypes.
The visit included UNILAG management, faculty members from the Department of European Languages, and Mrs Zoya Ogundowole, highlighting the university’s commitment to deepening international academic partnerships.
