The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, has announced key measures aimed at improving access and learning opportunities for students with disabilities across all campuses of the institution.
Speaking during a welcome event for newly admitted students with disabilities, organised by the Directorate of Students Affairs, Professor Ishaya reaffirmed the university’s commitment to inclusive education, stating that students with disabilities will no longer be confined to special education programmes.
“This year, we have admitted several students with disabilities into regular academic programmes. Last year, we directed all departments to begin preparations to accommodate such students,” he said.
He also disclosed that the university has, for the first time, employed support staff, including sign language interpreters, to assist students with disabilities in their academic work.
While acknowledging that many existing buildings were not originally designed with accessibility in mind, the Vice-Chancellor noted that all new structures are now being built with inclusive features. He added that the university is working to upgrade older facilities to meet accessibility standards.
The event highlighted ongoing institutional reforms aimed at creating a more equitable learning environment for all students at the University of Jos.
