The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has partnered with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, to enhance weather and climate research in Nigeria. As part of the partnership, NiMet will install a mini-Automatic Weather Station (AWOS) at ABU’s Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT). This will help support licensing for Nigeria’s Research Reactor-1 (NIRR-1).
The agreement was sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Abuja. NiMet will also assist ABU in utilising weather data for teaching, training, and research. The partnership aims to improve Nigeria’s Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and make it more locally useful. ABU students and staff will gain access to NiMet’s climate data, in accordance with its policy. NiMet’s boss, Prof. Charles Anosike, and ABU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, signed the agreement, which university leaders witnessed. The move is expected to support nuclear research and improve weather forecasting in Nigeria.
