A Nigerian institution has become the first in Africa to secure dual international recognition for artificial intelligence education, a development observers say could mark a turning point in the continent’s struggle to keep pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Cihan Digital Academy announced yesterday that it has been formally affiliated with the University of Artificial Intelligence and Experiential Education in Missouri, United States, and accredited under ISO standards by OICAP‑QA, a global quality assurance body. The recognition means African students can now access AI, data science and robotics programmes with credentials carrying international weight, narrowing a gap that has long hindered their competitiveness in the global tech economy.
“This is not just an institutional milestone,” said the academy’s director, Dr Celestine Achi. “It signals that African learners can now train and qualify to the same standards as their peers worldwide.” The affiliation provides pathways into US-designed, work-based curricula, while the ISO certification places the Lagos-based academy among a handful of AI institutions with audited global standards. Analysts say the move could also accelerate African contributions to fields such as precision medicine, fintech, and renewable energy technology.
