Renowned historian Professor Toyin Falola will be honoured with an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree by the Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo.
The award will be presented during the university’s 35th convocation ceremony, which will also feature the award of degrees, diplomas, certificates, and prizes to graduates from the 2017 to 2023 academic sessions.
Adeyemi Federal University of Education, formerly Adeyemi College of Education, is a top federal institution located in Ondo City, Ondo State. It was established in 1963 and began operations in May 1964 with 93 pioneer students. The school was named after Canon M.C. Adeyemi, a respected educator, and was initially established to train qualified teachers and conduct research on teaching methods.
Over time, the institution has grown into a full-fledged university with five major schools: Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Languages, Sciences, and Vocational and Technical Education, with 28 academic departments. It also runs degree programmes in affiliation with Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
In December 2021, the National Assembly passed the Adeyemi Federal University Establishment Bill, which was signed into law by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, officially transforming the college into a university.
Professor Falola, Africa’s most decorated humanities scholar, has had a longstanding relationship with the institution since its college days. He recently shared a personal reflection on his ties with the school, recalling longstanding friendships, mentorships, and collaborations over the years.
This latest award will be Professor Falola’s 28th honorary doctorate, following his recent recognition by North-West University in South Africa. He is known globally for his vast contributions to African history, culture, and education.
The convocation not only celebrates Professor Falola’s achievements but also reflects AFUED’s commitment to recognising individuals who have made significant contributions to education and national development.
