Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has raised an alarm over the impersonation of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, by fraudsters attempting to defraud the public.
The university said criminals had cloned the Vice-Chancellor’s social media accounts on WhatsApp and Facebook since his assumption of office in May. The impersonators allegedly contact his associates, offering fake contract opportunities for the supply of computers and other equipment.
In a statement, ABU urged staff, students and the public to ignore such messages, describing them as outright scams. The university said the fraudsters often use multiple phone numbers while displaying the Vice-Chancellor’s name and photograph to gain trust.
The institution confirmed that its Security Division is collaborating with relevant agencies to track down those behind the impersonation. It also reassured the public that steps are being taken to strengthen security around official communications. The university advised anyone approached with suspicious offers in the Vice-Chancellor’s name to report immediately to security authorities.
