The Alternative Bank has partnered with Plateau State University (PLASU) to introduce Alfalfa, a high-protein forage crop, as part of efforts to transform Nigeria’s livestock sector.
The initiative, funded by the bank under its Corporate Social Investment programme, is being tested at PLASU’s Faculty of Agriculture research plots in Bokkos. Early results have shown over 85% germination within two weeks and projected yields of 18–20 tonnes per hectare annually under rain-fed conditions. Applauding the initiative, experts say it could boost livestock productivity while also reducing farmer-herder conflicts.
During PLASU’s Green Field Day on Alfalfa trials, researchers, policymakers, farmers, and agribusiness leaders described the development as a potential game-changer for Nigeria’s dairy and beef industries.
Representing the bank’s CEO, Head of Agric Finance, Mrs. Ugonwa Ikegwuonu, called the trials a milestone for food security. She noted that the partnership shows how academia and financial institutions can jointly deliver sustainable agricultural solutions.
