Nigerian space scientist Dr Temidayo Oniosun has said that sending Egusi (melon seeds) to space is unrelated to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). The move is part of his “Food for Space” project, aimed at ensuring food security for astronauts who spend long months in space.
Dr Oniosun, a graduate of FUTA and founder of Space in Africa, said it is important to find ways to preserve culturally important foods like Egusi for future space missions. He explained that the idea is to make sure people in space can still enjoy familiar foods, while also testing how such crops behave in space. He also shared that he has signed a partnership to send more Nigerian seeds to space soon. Nigerians are proud of his achievements, especially as his work is raising the country’s profile in global space exploration. He made it clear: “This is not about GMO.”
