The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun mobilising its members across campuses nationwide for a potential strike over the Federal Government’s failure to address long-standing demands.
The union had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum urging the government to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement and resolve other pending issues.
According to ASUU, the government’s continued silence, despite being duly notified through the Ministers of Education and Labour, has left the union with no alternative but to activate strike plans.
ASUU President, Prof Chris Piwuna, in a memo dated October 5, 2025, directed all chapters to prepare for action, starting with a two-week warning strike before proceeding to an indefinite shutdown if necessary.
He expressed disappointment at the government’s lack of meaningful engagement, stressing that the strike remains the union’s last resort to compel genuine dialogue and action.
