The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University chapter, has warned it may resume a suspended strike over what it calls a breach of trust by the state government.
Chairman Dr Joshua Mbave Garba told reporters in Jalingo that the government of Governor Agbu Kefas had failed to implement a Memorandum of Action signed on January 17 2025. The agreement, which ended a strike in February, included a promise to begin monthly payments of ₦50m from February to settle Earned Academic Allowances. Dr Mbave said no payment had been made.
He accused the government of underfunding the university and failing to set up a functional pension scheme, despite repeated assurances. ASUU had given a two-week ultimatum that expired on July 31 without a response from the government. “This continued breach of trust undermines the industrial peace we have maintained for months,” Dr Mbave said. While acknowledging the governor’s education initiatives, the union insisted that lecturers’ welfare must be prioritised. It urged Governor Kefas to intervene personally, warning that failure to act would lead to another strike and disruption of academic activities at the university.
