The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the federal government that it will no longer tolerate what it described as the government’s insensitivity to lecturers’ welfare and the future of public universities.
Speaking in Asaba, the union’s Benin Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Monday Igbafen, stated that since ASUU suspended its strike in October 2022, the government has failed to honour the promises made to improve university education and staff conditions.
Key unresolved issues include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, poor funding of universities, unpaid salary arrears of 25–35%, four years of promotion arrears, and the withholding of over three months’ salaries.
Flanked by eight branch chairmen, Igbafen stressed that lecturers are determined to press for their demands to secure better welfare and protect affordable education in Nigeria.
ASUU’s warning has raised concerns about another nationwide crisis in the university system if the government fails to act promptly.
