Residents of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have hailed the Federal Government’s decision to introduce skill-based subjects into the basic education curriculum.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the residents described the move as a step toward building self-reliance among young people after school.
They noted that the initiative would enable students to gain hands-on skills that could secure their future and reduce dependence on white-collar jobs.
The Federal Government, after approval by the National Council on Education, has recently added 15 Skill Acquisition Programmes to the curricula of Primary and Junior Secondary Schools.
According to NAN, the programmes cover a wide range of areas, including plumbing, tiling, POP installation, event decoration, bakery, and confectionery.
Others include hairstyling, make-up, interior design, GSM repairs, solar installation, garment making, basic digital literacy, CCTV and intercom installation, agriculture, and food processing.
The new curriculum, residents believe, will foster creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship among students while equipping them for Nigeria’s evolving job market.
