A controversy has emerged among alumni of the law faculty at Benue State University in Makurdi over the nomination of law lecturer Timothy Yangien to a commissioner role in the state government.
A faction of the alumni recently petitioned the state House of Assembly, rejecting Yangien’s nomination and accusing him of abuse of office, oppression, and inhumane treatment of students during his tenure. However, another group backed his nomination, attesting to his integrity, professionalism, and character. In their letter to the state lawmakers, they described him as a man of unimpeachable merit.
A member of the first group, Kamo Sende, alleged the nomination provides another opportunity for Yangien to abuse his position. Meanwhile, Bemgba Iortyom, leader of the second faction, defended Yangien’s conduct and reputation. As of the latest update, it remains unclear whether the governor will withdraw the nomination or let the state assembly make a decision.
