The police have confirmed that the violent unrest at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) University, Lapai, in June was caused by cult groups, not armed robbers, as was earlier believed.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Niger State Police Command said investigations revealed that members of the Neo Black Movement of Africa (NBM) and the Vikings cult groups planned the attack, which started from students’ hostels and later spread to the campus and town.
The crisis claimed the life of Abdulwahab Jafar, a 200-level Education/Chemistry student, and left many others shaken.
Police disclosed that 19 suspects were initially arrested in Lapai and other locations, but after thorough screening, the number was reduced to seven. The suspects are facing charges of conspiracy, robbery, unlawful society, internet fraud, possession of dangerous weapons, and suspected homicide.
Authorities assured that efforts are ongoing to clamp down on cult activities in Niger State’s higher institutions to prevent further tragedies.
