Thousands of students from oil-producing communities in Delta State have begun receiving bursary awards from the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).
The payments, which cover beneficiaries across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, are part of an annual scheme aimed at supporting students from host communities. According to DESOPADEC officials, the bursary process was carried out through an online application system to allow eligible students to register before the final selection.
Executive Director of Social Services, Favour Izoukumor, said the scheme was intended to ease the financial burden on families in oil-producing areas. He added that the bursary programme is one of several interventions run by the commission, alongside empowerment and scholarship initiatives. The scheme is linked to the state government’s M.O.R.E. agenda, which Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has said is designed to promote human capital development.
