Senator Katung Awards N40m Scholarships to 400 Indigent Students

Senator Sunday Katung (PDP–Kaduna South) has awarded scholarships worth N40 million to 400 indigent students from his constituency to support their tertiary education. Each beneficiary received N100,000 through the Sunday Marshall Katung Foundation, which managed the disbursement of the funds.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Kafanchan on Saturday, Katung, represented by Bature Likoro, chairman of the Southern Kaduna Community Development Associations, said the initiative was designed to reduce the financial burden on students and their families.

He described education as a key driver of social change and human capital development, adding that the scholarship programme would be sustained beyond his tenure in the Senate. Chairperson of the foundation’s scholarship committee, Gloria Ballason, said 3,125 students applied, but only 400 were selected following a transparent screening process based on academic performance and financial need.

Committee secretary, Edward Auta, called for increased investment in education, while a guest lecturer, John La’ah, stressed the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in national development. Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Katung, describing the scholarship as timely support that would help them remain in school.
