The Head of Geography Department at Northwest University, Kano, Dr Nazifi Umar Alaramma, has urged President Bola Tinubu to make Geography a compulsory subject in all Nigerian secondary schools.
Speaking to education stakeholders in Kano, Nazifi said Geography is crucial for understanding climate change, environmental management, and national development. He noted that the subject equips students with analytical skills needed to tackle real-world issues such as desertification, flooding, and erosion.
He expressed concern that Geography is losing attention in schools, warning that this trend could produce a generation unaware of their environment. He called on the Federal Ministry of Education to review the National Policy on Education, aiming to reinstate Geography as a compulsory subject at both junior and senior levels, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Nazifi also urged the government to fund teacher training and provide essential teaching tools, such as maps and weather instruments, to enhance practical learning. He emphasised that countries like the UK, Japan, and Canada prioritise Geography education to shape informed citizens.
He concluded that making Geography compulsory would build an environmentally conscious and development-oriented generation.
