The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has thrown its weight behind the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in rejecting the Federal Government’s new Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a loan scheme for university workers.
In a statement signed by Deputy National Coordinator, Ogunjimi Isaac, and National Mobilisation Officer, Adaramoye Michael, ERC described the scheme as a “dubious debt trap” that shifts the government’s responsibility onto individual workers. The group said what lecturers truly need are fair salaries, proper funding for universities, and better working conditions — not loans that will worsen their financial struggles.
The ERC accused President Bola Tinubu of pushing policies unfavourable to workers in the name of reforms, warning that TISSF could further deepen the crisis in the education sector. It urged students, workers, and civil society groups to join hands in rejecting the scheme, insisting that lecturers and all workers deserve living wages and decent conditions.
