The Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Obudu, has suspended its Provost, Dr Richard Ugbaha Utubaku, over allegations of corruption, irregularities, and misappropriation of funds.
The suspension, which will last for three months, aims to allow for a thorough investigation into the accusations. The decision followed rising tensions and threats of protest by the college’s joint unions over alleged misconduct by the provost.
According to a union source, the Council’s decision prompted the suspension of a planned protest after assurances were given that the matter would be handled internally. “They have suspended him for three months to pave the way for an investigation. We have agreed to hold off our protest for now, but expect the return of all college vehicles sold to him within three days,” the source said.
A letter dated October 13, 2025, signed by Registrar and Council Secretary, Mr Evans O. Iyenya, stated that the Council received multiple complaints from deans, unions, and the procurement director alleging unauthorised auctioning of college vehicles. The Council directed Utubaku to hand over all college property and documents to the Deputy Provost. While academic activities remain unaffected, union members have warned they may resume protests if the alleged irregularities are not addressed.
