Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, has been closed indefinitely after students staged a protest over a late-night robbery at the male hostel.
According to Registrar Alhaji Kasimu Salihu, robbers broke into the hostel, stole students’ belongings, and injured at least two people. While management was addressing the situation, hoodlums reportedly hijacked the protest, leading to violence. Students were ordered to leave campus within two hours for security reasons. The robbery, which happened overnight, sparked outrage as students accused the school of poor security. Early in the morning, protesters blocked Bauchi–Dass Road and the main school gate.
The demonstration turned chaotic when outsiders joined, blocking the highway. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, prompting stone-throwing, before order was restored. This prompted the timely intervention of the police force to restore order. One victim, Matta Musa, suffered a head injury, while others were taken to the hospital. Police spokesman SP Ahmed Wakil said investigations were ongoing.
