Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state has approved N3 billion for the renovation of 13 boarding schools allegedly shut down by Abdullahi Ganduje, his predecessor. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ibrahim Adam, special adviser on information to Yusuf, said the affected schools would be upgraded.
“The renovation became necessary due to the dilapidated state of infrastructure in the affected schools, which led to their closure under the previous administration. The current government is committed to reviving and repositioning the educational sector, especially in rural communities,” the statement read.
“The approved boarding schools for renovation are GGSS Unguwar Gyartai, GGSS Gezawa, GGSS Sumaila, GGSS Kwa, GGSS Albasu, GGSS Madobi, GGSS Yar Gaya, GGSS Jogana, GGSS Danzabuwa, Unity College Karaye, GGU Kachako, GGSS Jambaki, and GC Tudun Wada,” Adam said the governor is concerned about the past neglect of the education sector, particularly the condition of 13 schools, most of which are located in rural parts of the state.
“The decision to revamp these schools reflects the administration’s determination to prioritise education as a foundation for long-term development,” he said. The aide stated that Yusuf’s administration is committed to improving access to quality education and ensuring that no part of the state is left behind in the government’s development agenda.
In June, Yusuf approved the payment of registration fees for 3,526 community school students taking the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations. The governor said the costs would include students writing the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examinations and cover all community and voluntary school students who passed their qualifying examinations.
