Nigerian graduates who combine local qualifications with international certifications and digital skills will be more attractive to employers abroad, according to a University of Lagos alumnus.
Speaking, UK-based Nigerian Oluwafemi Abiodun said students should pursue professional courses alongside their degrees to boost global competitiveness. “An undergraduate in management sciences can take internationally recognised courses such as CIMA, ACCA and CISA,” he explained. “Combining local and international qualifications makes candidates instantly attractive to employers abroad.”
He also emphasised the importance of transparency in funding education. Abiodun called for a fully traceable accounting system where public disbursements are digitised, audited by independent firms, and publicly reported. “Transparency will ensure money reaches infrastructure, teacher development, and learning materials—delivering measurable student outcomes,” he said.
Abiodun’s own academic journey reflects his advice. After graduating with distinction from UNILAG, he went on to complete an MSc at the University of Greenwich, where he excelled in business and technology modules. He has since taken on professional roles in both Nigeria and the UK.
His story, rooted in discipline and ambition, demonstrates how Nigerian students can compete effectively on the global stage.
