The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has restated its commitment to promoting education and human capacity development in the region.
The Deputy Director of Education, Health, and Social Services, Florence Ediagbonya, pledged during a sensitisation rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, marking International Literacy Day.
She said the rally was aimed at raising awareness about the global event while highlighting the Commission’s ongoing efforts to improve literacy levels in the Niger Delta.
Under the leadership of managing director Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC has introduced a series of initiatives, including foreign and local postgraduate scholarships, the distribution of digital tablets and educational materials to schools, and the construction of classrooms and hostels in tertiary institutions.
Ediagbonya noted that the Commission had also donated desks and other facilities to schools and communities across the region. “Literacy is the bedrock of development and a fundamental human right. Every individual deserves the basic ability to read, write, speak, and communicate,” she said.
She added that the NDDC was determined to ensure that communities in the Niger Delta were not left behind in the global pursuit of literacy.
Ediagbonya commended Ogbuku for his support, saying he had empowered the Education Directorate to intensify its actions on literacy promotion.
