South Korean technology giant Samsung says it aims to launch sixth-generation (6G) mobile technology by 2028, even as Nigeria has yet to roll out 5G commercially.
In a white paper released on 14 July, Samsung outlined its vision for 6G, projecting mass adoption by 2030. The company says the technology will deliver peak data rates of 1,000 Gbps and air latency under 100 microseconds — 50 times faster and ten times more responsive than 5G. Samsung’s research head, Sunghyun Choi, said work on 6G began last year because developing a new generation of mobile technology typically takes a decade. He added that the technology will support immersive extended reality, high-fidelity holograms and advanced robotics.
While over 45 countries have adopted 5G, Nigeria has yet to join despite trials since 2019. The rollout has been delayed by Senate-ordered safety reviews, despite international assurances from the ITU, GSMA and WHO that 5G is safe.
The Nigerian Communications Commission is still consulting stakeholders on a 5G policy framework. Experts say both 5G and 6G will transform internet speeds, user experience and the Internet of Things.
