The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has reached an agreement with the school authorities over the recently introduced ₦10,000 fee for extended stay in halls of residence.
The Division of Student Affairs (DSA) had directed that only students with valid accommodations during the 2023/2024 session would be eligible to apply for the extension, raising concerns from hall executives who described the policy as unfair and burdensome. Following negotiations, the Union announced on Sunday that the fee has been reduced to ₦8,000 for students not attached to specific programmes.
In addition, students undertaking the Students’ Work Experience Programme (SWEP), Industrial Training (SIWES), and professional courses such as ICAN will benefit from tailored arrangements to be communicated through faculty leaders.
The Union also stated that students in peculiar situations not covered by the directive can approach Union officers for clarification and support. According to the leadership, the outcome followed a week of consultations with the university management aimed at easing the financial strain on students.
