The University of British Columbia (UBC) has reaffirmed its commitment to attracting top research talent with its Four-Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF), one of the institution’s most competitive funding schemes.
The fellowship provides a minimum annual stipend of $18,200 alongside full tuition coverage for up to four years of full-time doctoral study. It is open to both Canadian and international students enrolled in PhD, DMA or MDPhD programmes.
UBC said the fellowship aims to recruit and retain outstanding students while giving them financial stability and academic freedom to focus on advanced research. Graduate programmes nominate candidates based on academic excellence, research potential, and alignment with UBC’s priorities. Final selections are made by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Recipients may also combine the award with other scholarships, teaching or research assistantships, provided they maintain satisfactory academic progress. Current students who have not previously received equivalent funding may also be nominated.
UBC, ranked among the world’s top 40 universities, offers more than 300 graduate programmes. The 4YF has supported doctoral students across engineering, health sciences, arts and social sciences, many of whom have gone on to leadership roles in academia, research, and industry.
