The University of Ibadan (UI) has advised university administrators to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance campus operations and increase productivity.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, whom Prof. Peter Olapegba represented, said this during a two-day training workshop for human resource staff, organised with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, UK. The theme was “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in HR Practices in Nigerian Universities.”
In his speech, Prof. Adebowale, who robustly supported the use of AI, stressed that AI can help reduce human errors, manage data better, and even predict future outcomes. He noted that all over the world, the use of AI has become mainstream, and it is already being used to solve significant problems; therefore, Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind.
The Vice-Chancellor also stressed the important role of the academic institutions in ensuring that Nigeria tap into the vast possibilities inherent in AI for academic efficiency and economic development. He noted that the HR departments in various institutions play a significant role. However, he warned that administrators must use it responsibly, ensuring ethical practices and protecting people’s data.
The workshop, which was initiated by Mrs. Olubunmi Faluyi, was designed to strengthen HR capacity and promote innovative practices in Nigerian universities. It had participants from UI, Trinity University, and Abiola Ajimobi Technical University.
