University Autonomy Must Go with Accountability – Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, has informed the newly appointed governing councils of federal universities that full autonomy must be accompanied by strict accountability.

Speaking in Abuja during the official inauguration on Tuesday, Dr Alausa warned that universities must remain transparent in key areas, such as budgeting, contracts, and staff appointments. He said the councils are expected to act as custodians of public trust.

“The government will take action if any member fails to do their job properly,” he warned.

The minister also handed out appointment letters and urged the new council members to provide visionary leadership that can make Nigeria’s institutions globally competitive. He praised the appointees, saying their selection was based on their achievements and contributions to the country. He called on them to serve with integrity and help reshape the education sector for better results.
