Olori Ivie Atuwatse III, wife of Olu of Warri, has proposed that Nigeria adopt a different education model, directing attention to Finland’s play-based learning approach.
“I visited Finland about two years ago, and they have play-based learning. Often, the way our children approach learning is very boxed and limiting. And so their ability to enjoy what they are learning is diminished. Thus, with that, their ability to receive what they are learning is also diminished”, she said.
Atuwatse III explained that the approach combines child-friendly environments, pedagogy, and infrastructure in learning.
She added that the model helps students retain knowledge, improves learning outcomes, and makes education more interesting. The queen urges the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to prioritise conducive learning and improve Nigeria’s education quality through school curricula modernisation. Contributing to economic development, Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, recently gave two schools in Warri ₦10 million each in a quiz and debate competition.
