Students at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have challenged landlords over the rising costs of off-campus accommodation.
The union said it acted after receiving complaints about what it described as “exorbitant” fees for off-campus housing. In a statement, Chief Press Secretary Awolumate Oluwaseun said the union president, Comrade Salami Akeem, inspected a student lodge near the Glo Mast in Akungba, accompanied by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Samson Laleye, represented by Sub Dean Ikuegbebe Segun.
The lodge reportedly charged ₦500,000 for a single-room self-contained apartment. The union described the rent as “highly outrageous” after reviewing the property’s facilities, including roofing, ceiling, kitchen cabinet, toilet fittings, lighting, wardrobe, and windows.
During a discussion with the landlord, a revised rent of ₦450,000 was proposed. The union countered with ₦350,000, citing economic realities, and said it is awaiting the landlord’s final response.
The union urged students to report cases of excessive rent or harassment by landlords, stressing its commitment to protecting student welfare in the community.
