The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, says it has developed two applications to support security agencies in tackling kidnapping and “One Chance” robberies.
Acting President of AUST, Professor Azikiwe Onwualu, announced the initiative at a press briefing ahead of the university’s first National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation Communications (STICOMS), scheduled for 21–23 October in Abuja.
Onwualu said the apps were created through partnerships between the university and private innovators with practical ideas but limited technical capacity. “We are collaborating with a private organisation developing an app to address kidnapping. A Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed,” he said.
The AUST head explained that the projects highlight the role of universities in applying research to real-world security challenges. He added that the conference would bring together academics, policymakers and industry leaders to explore how science and technology could drive innovation and improve national security.
Kidnapping and “One Chance” robberies, where criminals lure unsuspecting passengers into vehicles to rob them, remain a persistent threat across Nigeria. Authorities have welcomed technological solutions as part of efforts to curb the crimes.
