The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the Federal Government’s appeal to suspend its planned warning strike, which is scheduled to start on October 13.
ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced this on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television, saying the government’s intervention came “too late.” He accused the Ministry of Education of consistently delaying responses to issues affecting university lecturers.
According to Piwuna, ASUU had given the government a three-week ultimatum after a meeting in Sokoto to address their demands, but there was no meaningful communication during that time.
He said the union’s decision to proceed with the strike followed years of neglect and unfulfilled promises on better funding, welfare, and improved working conditions for lecturers.
Piwuna emphasised that ASUU remains open to dialogue but will not call off the action unless the government shows real commitment to solving the problems confronting Nigeria’s university system.
