The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Benin Zone, has called on students, parents, civil society groups, and industry leaders to pressure the federal and state governments to honour their agreements with the union.
Prof. Monday Lewis Igbefen, ASUU Zonal Coordinator, warned that failing to implement the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement could trigger a major crisis in Nigeria’s university system. He noted that since the last strike ended in October 2022, the government has yet to review lecturers’ conditions of service or release withheld salaries and arrears.
Speaking at Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, Prof. Igbefen stressed that unresolved issues such as underfunding, poor salary structures, and delayed promotions continue to harm academic staff and threaten the quality of education.
He urged the government to implement the renegotiated agreement fully, describing it as the only way to address decades of neglect and prevent further decay in Nigeria’s universities. The union called for urgent action to avert a looming educational crisis.
