A Lagos High Court has stopped the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) from going ahead with the union’s leadership election in the school.
Justice Ismaila Ijelu gave the order in a case filed by Comrade Gbenga Adenaiya and six others against Comrade Yusuf Rasaq, UNILAG, and six others. The dispute arose from a leadership tussle within the UNILAG chapter of SSANU.
The court, after hearing from human rights lawyer Chief Ajose Abejoye and Oluwaseun Ikumelo, representing the claimants, ruled that all parties must maintain the status quo and refrain from any action that could undermine the court’s authority.
Justice Ijelu specifically ordered that the planned election be put on hold until the case is resolved. The matter was adjourned to October 24 for the hearing of the motion on notice.
