A lecturer at Sokoto State University, Dr. Maria Abdullahi, has urged students to take vocational skills seriously as a way to survive and succeed in today’s tough economy.
Speaking to economics students, she reminded them that with Nigeria’s unemployment rate now above 33%, relying only on office jobs is no longer realistic. Dr. Abdullahi explained that vocational training gives young people practical knowledge, builds their confidence, and improves their chances of getting good jobs.
Dr. Abdullahi added that such skills act as a safety net and also prepare students to cope with the fast changes happening in the world of work. With technology and automation changing many industries, skills like coding, digital marketing, and data analysis are now in high demand.
She encouraged young Nigerians to be innovative and proactive if they want to succeed in today’s job market, stressing that vocational skills can help them discover their potential and play a stronger role in building the nation’s future.
