The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦68.7 billion for electricity projects in Nigerian universities and teaching hospitals. The announcement was made by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
The projects carried out under the Energising Education Programme are designed to provide a reliable power supply and reduce energy costs in schools and hospitals. Managed by the Rural Electrification Agency, the initiative involves engineering, procurement, and construction works.
Adelabu said the lack of stable electricity has caused crises, blackouts, and even strikes in some institutions. He added that some schools already enjoy solar power, such as the University of Abuja and Usmanu Danfodiyo University. The new funding will benefit eight more institutions, including UNILAG, ABU Zaria, OAU Ile-Ife, UNN, UI, UCH, UNICAL, and FU Wukari. The projects are expected to be completed within nine months.
