The federal government has approved ₦1.85bn to fund the education, rehabilitation and reintegration of Chibok schoolgirls rescued from Boko Haram captivity.
The Ministry of Education announced the allocation in a statement on Thursday. Its spokesperson, Boriowo Folasade, said the intervention would sustain the Chibok Girls Rehabilitation Programme until 2027.
He explained that the package covers tuition, accommodation, vocational training, psychosocial care and other welfare services. “This commitment is not only financial, it is moral. It represents Nigeria’s pledge to turn a dark chapter in our nation’s history into a story of resilience, dignity and hope,” the statement read.
The government said 68 of the girls are currently enrolled at the American University of Nigeria in Yola, Adamawa State, where tuition and accommodation fees will continue to be paid.
Boko Haram abducted 276 pupils from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14 2014. Since then, 108 have been rescued or released, while 87 remain missing.
Officials said the renewed funding is intended to provide long-term stability for those freed and ensure they are supported into adulthood more than a decade after the mass abduction.
