The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s education sector to reduce reliance on foreign aid.
Oloyede made the call in Ibadan on Thursday while speaking at the 595th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ibadan, delivered by Prof. Dhikru Adewale Yaboyaju of the Department of Political Science.
He emphasised that education is crucial to national growth and argued that a well-positioned sector would enable Nigeria to address its own challenges independently, without relying on foreign assistance. According to him, progress will come faster if citizens also take responsibility and contribute meaningfully within their capacities.
The JAMB boss emphasised that collective commitment to strengthening education is key to national development, noting that no country can grow beyond the quality of its learning system. He urged all stakeholders to support policies and practices that will transform Nigerian schools into true engines of progress.
