LASU Queens Disqualified from World Cup

The Lagos State University (LASU) women’s football team, known as LASU Queens, has been disqualified from the 2025 FISU University World Cup in Dalian, China.

The team, which earned the right to represent Africa after winning the 2024 All Africa University Games, was denied accreditation for failing to meet the organisers’ squad requirements. FISU rules demand at least 16 players and five officials, but the Nigerian champions arrived with only 13 players.

This shortfall led to their disqualification before the global competition began on September 16, cutting short their hopes of showcasing African football talent on the global stage.

LASU Queens had been drawn in Group A alongside universities from China, Brazil, and Spain. Their absence now leaves the group with only three teams.

The development is a significant blow for the players and Nigerian university sports. It also raises concerns about the country’s planning and preparation for international competitions. The tournament continues, with the final set for September 28.
