A Nigerian mathematician, Dr. Sunday Esebre, is calling on governments and institutions to put more money into mathematics research, warning that low funding could slow scientific progress. Esebre, who recently completed his PhD at Texas Tech University in the US, said that mathematics is not just about theory, but forms the basis for breakthroughs in technology, physics, and engineering.
“Mathematics drives innovation. The results we achieve often impact areas such as quantum computing and engineering. Without proper funding, these advances may stop,” he said.
Esebre, who won the Hildebrand Mathematics Scholar Award in 2022, gained international recognition for solving a knot theory problem related to Chern-Simons theory. This field connects geometry with quantum physics. His work has opened new directions for advanced scientific research.
He added that investing in mathematics research also enhances teaching and motivates students to view the subject as a powerful tool for problem-solving and innovation.
