Fresh controversy has erupted over lawmakers’ salaries, after claims that a senator earns more in a month than a teacher could make in 30 years.
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) says senators receive about ₦1.06m monthly in salaries and allowances. However, some lawmakers, including Sumaila Kawu and former Senator Shehu Sani, have stated that the actual figure is closer to ₦21m.
The wide gap has sparked criticism of government spending priorities, with many Nigerians arguing that teachers – central to the country’s development – remain underpaid and undervalued.
Observers also pointed to voter behaviour, saying choices often based on identity or personal interests allow such disparities to continue unchecked.
The row comes as schools across the country struggle with underfunding, teacher shortages and dilapidated infrastructure, raising questions about equity and the value placed on education.
