Nigeria’s decision to adopt a future-ready school curriculum has drawn praise from international education experts, who describe it as a landmark step in aligning learning with the demands of a rapidly changing world.
The new curriculum covers basic and senior secondary education, reshaping subject offerings and introducing skills in artificial intelligence, coding, robotics, media literacy, entrepreneurship, and citizenship. It also reduces subject overload while placing more emphasis on practical, project-based learning.
Monday Anyairo, global president of World Innovators University, said the reform offers Nigerian children the opportunity to learn skills that align with both the country’s demographic realities and the digital economy. “By foregrounding digital competencies, problem solving, entrepreneurship, and civic literacy, the reform aligns schooling with the demands of a fast-changing economy and society,” he said.
Anyairo noted that the curriculum strengthens national cohesion through heritage and civic education while supporting teachers by streamlining workloads and prioritising depth over breadth. He added that Nigeria’s digital strategy makes the reform timely.
Ashok K. Gupta, provost of World Innovators University, emphasised that teachers will be central to the university’s success. “Great curricula become great learning only through well-supported teachers,” he said, adding that the institution plans to provide training, open resources, and curriculum-aligned micro-credentials to prepare educators for the rollout.
The World Innovators University Institute pledged to partner with federal and state governments, schools, and NGOs to ensure smooth implementation. It is also inviting proposals for co-funded pilots ahead of the 2025/2026 rollout.
Education experts say the reform could be transformative if matched by effective teacher training and classroom resources. For Nigeria, they argue, the new curriculum offers not just updated lessons but a pathway to equipping its young population with skills for the future.
