The National Universities Commission (NUC) has released a list of 58 illegal universities operating across Nigeria without approval. The commission warned parents, guardians, and prospective students to avoid such institutions, stressing that certificates obtained from them are invalid and will not be recognised for jobs or further studies.
According to the NUC, these institutions violated the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act. While some lack physical campuses in Nigeria, others operate as unapproved affiliates of foreign universities or run illegal study centres.
“These so-called universities pose a danger to Nigeria’s education system. They deceive students with promises of cheap and fast-tracked degrees, but their certificates are worthless,” the statement read.
Among those blacklisted are the University of Accountancy and Management Studies; Christians of Charity American University of Science and Technology, Nkpor; University of Industry, Yaba; Royal University, Abakaliki; United Christian University, Imo; and Western University, Kwara.
The commission urged Nigerians to always verify institutions before seeking admission.
