Abia State Governor Alex Otti has resolved the crisis at Government College Umuahia with the inauguration of the new Government College Umuahia Fisher Educational Development Trust, FEDT, Board, headed by Chinedu Ahaiwe.
Earlier in the year, Mr Chukwudi Onwudinanti wrote a petition alleging that school fees were exorbitantly charged at one million naira per student, to the detriment of poor students, among other claims. The allegations were probed by the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Public Petitions.
Inaugurating the FEDT Board, headed by Chinedu Ahaiwe in Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti stated that his initiatives in the state’s education sector are geared towards creating an enabling environment for students to excel. Otti, who was represented by the Secretary to the Abia State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, said there was a need to restore the lost glory of Government College Umuahia and other schools in the state. He informed the FEDT Board that his administration was creating a society everybody would be happy about.
Responding on behalf of other members of the Government College Umuahia Fisher Educational Development Trust, FEDT, Board, the National President of Government College Umuahia Old Boys Association, Chinedu Ahaiwe, expressed gratitude to the Abia State Government for supporting their efforts to revive the school. He highlighted the rich history and legacy of Government College Umuahia and explained why they proposed that the state government take over the school’s management.
Ahaiwe further said that the FEDT is a special-purpose vehicle to drive the restoration project and commended the pioneer board for its contributions for almost 11 years, promising to accommodate the interests of parents and brilliant students.
