The Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, says the state government has significantly improved access, teacher welfare, and infrastructure in the basic education sector since 2019.
Speaking in an interview, Adeniran said the Seyi Makinde-led administration abolished school fees in public primary and secondary schools, leading to increased enrollment. He noted that no child of school-going age is to be prevented from attending school, describing it as a constitutional right. On teachers’ welfare, he said the government cleared salary arrears inherited from the previous administration, now pays salaries before the 25th of every month, and has settled leave bonuses from 2019 to 2024.
He added that primary school teachers can now rise to level 17, receive an additional 27.5 per cent salary allowance, and benefit from regular training, including digital teaching skills. Adeniran said the state has rehabilitated school facilities using counterpart funding from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and has introduced dedicated reading and writing periods to improve literacy levels.
