Six University of Lagos undergraduates have secured places in The Bridge Fellowship, one of Nigeria’s most competitive leadership programmes, a feat achieved by fewer than five per cent of over 8,000 applicants nationwide.
For the students, Oluwaseun Oludemi (Architecture), Kehinde Kadiri (Building), Ugonma Akanwa (Building), Al-Ameen Abolare (Electrical & Electronics Engineering), Treasure Adeolu (Mechanical Engineering) and Temitope Aiyebogan (Systems Engineering) — the journey represents more than academic recognition. It serves as a gateway to networks, mentorship, and opportunities that can shape their role in Africa’s future.
The Bridge Fellowship is designed to cultivate young Nigerians into changemakers by immersing them in leadership training, innovation labs and service projects. Alumni of the programme have gone on to launch social enterprises, tech start-ups and policy initiatives.
For UNILAG, the achievement signals both pride and promise. Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola congratulated the fellows, stating that the university is committed to nurturing leaders who “combine innovation with service.”
However, beyond celebration, the fellowship also raises a question for Nigeria’s education system: how many more students with potential remain locked out of such opportunities? With youth unemployment rising and public universities struggling, the six UNILAG students may be a symbol of what is possible when talent meets the right platform.
